Benefits of a Foam Roller
You’ve muscled through some tough workouts and now you’re tight and stiff. Sound familiar? Time to get rolling! Foam rolling that is.
The benefits of the foam roller are similar to deep tissue massage:
- improved circulation;
- increased mobility;
- reduced inflammation;
- breaks up scar tissue
Each of these elements are important for effective recovery. But the buck doesn’t stop there! A foam roller is easy to use, can travel with you anywhere and allows convenient relief when needed. A few key spots where a foam roller can be particularly effective include the iliotibial band (ITB), glutes, adductors, and quads.
To use, place the foam roller beneath the muscle and gently rest your body weight over it, either sitting or laying depending on the spot. Roll slowly and in control, pausing occasionally over tight, tender areas. It goes without saying, you’re not trying to bruise yourself…so if the pressure is too intense, use your free leg to lighten the load.
